About Fieldnotes

Made in the field, for the field.

Fieldnotes is built by producers and directors who spent years making documentary and unscripted shows for studios, streaming platforms, and networks. The kind of work where the story isn't locked until you're standing in it.

And every time, prep was the same fight. The film lived in six places at once. A treatment in one doc, sequences in another, handwritten notes from a scout, voice memos from the drive home, a schedule someone rebuilt from scratch the night before travel. Every tool assumed a numbered screenplay. We never had one. That's the whole point of this kind of filmmaking.

So prep stayed chaotic and fragmented, and the cost always landed in the worst place. Out in the field, with a crew on the clock, discovering what we hadn't figured out.

Fieldnotes is the tool we wanted on every one of those shoots. Drop in the mess you already have, and walk into the field with a real plan. An outline, storyboards with your actual cast in them, a shooting schedule, and one book the whole crew can open.

Deep ocean water at dusk
The story is out there in the water. Everything else is paperwork, and the paperwork is ours.
What Fieldnotes believes
01

Start from the mess

Your 1 a.m. notes are the real document. The tool should meet you there, not make you transcribe your thinking into somebody else's format.

02

You stay the director

Fieldnotes drafts; you decide. Every outline, board and schedule is yours to edit, and nothing generates until you approve what it understood.

03

Prep should feel like magic

Hours, not weeks. The busywork is ours so the story stays yours. Go into the field with a plan, not a hope.

Go make the thing.
We'll do the paperwork.
